NASA World Wind to-do list, of sorts

What’s in store for the open-source NASA World Wind? The Earth is Square lists some projects people will be working on during Google’s Summer of Code:

  • Shapefile improvements
  • Student Teacher interaction system
  • Correctly Handling Non-Ortho Images
  • Support of Adding Imagery into World Wind
  • Integrated Browser

Adding imagery and a browser involve World Wind catching up with Google Earth. The other three projects sound intriguing, though.

  1. Why is the GOOGLE Summer of Code working on World Wind? Help please???????

  2. Adding Imagery is my student’s project (I am the mentor)

The idea is not to catch up to GE, but to let people drag and drop imagery that is already georeferenced onto the globe and have it show up in the world without needed a server. We intend to support all the *wierd* data types that exist via GDAL (raster) and OGR (vector) in addition to the standard wld referenced jpgs/png/gifs and GeoTIFFS.

Hopefully we can become like Mapcruncher but for WorldWind — http://research.microsoft.com/mapcruncher/

The geowankers/geomancers of the world need a nice Opensource platform to make their lives easier and we appreciate Google living up to its ‘non-evil’ moniker in the Open(Source) community :)

  3. I’m really looking forward to an easy way to add imagery to WW.

Stefan, is your project going to automatically tile images so that they can be streamed at different resolutions as one zooms in/out??? That would really put WW at an advantage over GE, since I doubt GE would ever allow end users to do that.

Please let me know if you need any beta testers :)
