Just for my reference: Firefox GeoURL extension. If I were to tweak it so that it opens Google Earth instead of another tab when it detects geoURL metadata, then I’d be set.

funnily enough, it’s a functionality i’ve started to look into…only problem is that there doesn’t seem to be any command line options for google earth, and the alternative is to generate a temporary KML file and point google earth to it…but it’s certainly something i’d like to see happening in one of the next versions of my extension. :)
